Thomas Dakins (Abt. 1770 – )
The first known DAKINS/DAKYNS on St. Vincent was Thomas DAKINS/DAKYNS, who was born in England about 1770. He was the son of William DAKINS/DAKYNS and his wife Sarah. They had at least three other sons, namely William Whitfield DAKINS/DAKYNS, Charles DAKINS/DAKYNS, and John DAKINS/DAKYNS, who all apparently remained in England.

William Whitfield DAKINS/DAKYNS, born in 1767, became a Doctor of Divinity and Chaplain to the Forces, serving in that capacity between 1830 and 1844. He married Susanna, maiden name unknown. Her death is recorded in the Times of London for 08 December 1834 as follows: “In Dean’s-yard, on the 5th inst., Susanna, wife of the Rev. Dr. DAKINS, Precentor of Westminster-abbey.”

William Whitfield DAKINS/DAKYNS died 10 January 1850 and was buried in the south cloister of Westminster abbey, according to the Times of London for 06 May 1938, which recites an article about a commemorative tablet that was placed at Guards Chapel in his honor:”…in grateful memory of the Venerable William Whitfield DAKINS, Doctor of Divinity, born 1767, died 1850. Principal Chaplain to the Forces from 1830 to 1844, founder and first chaplain of the Royal Military Chapel. St. James’s Park. This article further states that another service honoring DAKINS will take place in a few days at Westminster Abbey “when there will be unveiled a newly cut stone to mark the site of his grave in the south cloister.” The article states that DAKINS preached the first sermon at the opening of the Guards Chapel “100 years ago today.”
Six months after his 1850 death, the following appeared in the Times of London for 03 June 1850:
“The Rev. W. W. DAKINS, D. D., late Chaplain-General to the Forces — All persons CLAIMING to be CREDITORS of the late Rev. WILLIAM WHITFIELD DAKINS, D. D., formerly of Dean’s-yard. Westminster, and who died at Dover on the 10th of January last, are requested to send in their accounts immediately to my office, 12, Gray’s-inn-square. GEORGE POPE, Solicitor to the Executor.”

Charles DAKINS/DAKYNS’s death is noted in the Times of London for 12 March 1846 as follows:
“On the 27th ult., at Kegworth. Leicestershire, in his 65th year, Charles DAKINS, Esq., youngest son of the late

William DAKINS, Esq., of Alvestoke, Hants.”

Nothing further is known on John DAKINS/DAKYNS.

As for Thomas DAKINS/DAKYNS, it’s not yet known why he relocated from England to St. Vincent. He married there on 25 September 1802 to Lydia HACKSHAW, the daughter of Thomas HACKSHAW and Lydia ALEXANDER. Lydia HACKSHAW had been born on St. Vincent about 1773. Her baptism is recorded as 04 March 1773 in the records of St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Kingstown, St. Vincent. Thomas and Lydia had the following children, all born and christened in St. Vincent:

• Thomas Henry DAKYNS was born in St. Vincent after 1802. He is listed as “Thomas H. DAKINS, Surgeon, Troop of Light Cavalry, 1828 in Appendix XIX on page lvii of the book “An Historical Account of the Island of St. Vincent” by Charles Shephard. Additionally, he is likely the “Mr. DAKYNS”, mentioned as Speaker of the House of Assembly at St. Vincent, in an article found in the Times of London for Wednesday, 07 May 1845. Another newspaper article found in the St. Vincent Gazette of 25 December 1845 contains another likely reference to him. It states: “We briefly noticed last week the arrival of the ship Helen Thomson from Madeira with immigrants. Those people have entered into contracts of service under the Master and Servants Act of this island, and are located on various estates. They are certainly a fine body taken altogether, and public thanks are unquestionably due to Mr. DAKINS for his judicious selection of them, as well as to Mr. James PORTER…..”. He might also be the “T. H. DAKYNS” named in a Times of London article dated 05 April 1862 regarding the Clifton College Company. This article states: “Information in London can be obtained on reference to T. H. DAKYNS, Esq., Treasury-office, Middle Temple”. See below for more information on him.
• Emily DAKYNS was born in St. Vincent after 1802. Married a Mr. DUPONT, no other information known.
  James Graham DAKYNS was born in St. Vincent after 1802. Did not marry, no other information known.
• Harriet Elizabeth DAKYNS was born in St. Vincent after 1802. Married a distant cousin, Edward Smythies DAKINS. No other information known.

Thomas Henry DAKYNS was born about 1804 in St. Vincent (see additional info above). He married Harriet DASENT on 20 November 1834 at Saint Dunstan In The West, London, England. • John Roche DAKYNS was born about 1835 in St. Vincent. Records for Trinity College in England show that he began his studies there at age 19 on 10 December 1854, received his B. A. in 1859 and his M. A. in 1864. He did not marry. He had an outstanding career as a geologist and was employed by the government in the Geological Survey of England. His death was noted in the Times of London for 01 October 1910 as follows:
  DAKYNS – On the 27th ult., at Snowdon View, near Beddgelert, North Wales, JOHN ROCHE DAKYNS, late of H. M. Geological Survey, and eldest son of the late Thomas Henry DAKYNS, formerly of St. Vincent, West Indies, and of Rugby.
  John Roche DAKYNS is found on the 1881 British Census as a lodger in the Edward HARRISON household in Bridlington, York, Page 2, Dwelling: Station Yard Assistant Station Masters House. He is age 45, unmarried, born in St. Vincent, West Indies employed in His Majesty’s Geological Survey.
• Henry Graham DAKYNS was born about 1838 in St. Vincent. He entered Trinity College in 1856. He received his B. A. in 1860 and his M. A. in 1864. He served as House Master and Assistant Master at Clifton College 1862 to 1889. He married Margaret Elsy PIRIE (daughter of Alexander PIRIE and Charlotte Ann LINDSAY of Scotland — according to Rootsweb’s World Connect) before 1874. Henry Graham DAKYNS died 21 June 1911 at Haslemere station in Surrey, England. He was known for having tutored the sons of famed poet Alfred TENNYSON in 1860.

Henry Graham DAKYNS entered Trinity College in 1892. He received his B. A. in 1895 and his M. A. in 1919. He married Winnifred PATTINSON about 1902. Both of their deaths were reported in the Times of London as follows:
DAKYNS – Died February 17, 1937 of heart failure. Of 7 Thurloe Court. Henry Graham DAKYNS, oldest son of the late Henry Graham DAKYNS and husband of Winifred DAKYNS. He was cremated at Golders Green on February 20, 1937. Times of London for 19 February 1937.

MRS. WINIFRED DAKYNS
Mrs. Winifred DAKYNS, C. B. E., died at her home at Hassocks, Sussex. She was 84.
Youngest daughter of John PATTINSON, of Gateshead, co. Durham, she was born in 1875. Educated at Gateshead High School and at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1902 she married Henry Graham DAKYNS (son of the well known Clifton master of the same name), who died in 1937.

“During the First World War she was closely associated with her friend the late Dame Katharine FURSE, first of all in the Women’s V. A. D. department (under the Joint Council of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John), and afterwards, between 1917 and 1919, with the Women’s Royal Naval Service, of which, as Assistant Director, she was Dame Katharine’s second-in-command. The uniform which represents the Wren Officer’s uniform in the Imperial War Museum was Mrs. DAKYNS. She was made C. B. E. in 1919 and was also an Honorary Serving Sister of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. She was actively concerned in the affairs of the Women’s Club, of which for 30 years she was honorary secretary. A woman of the utmost kindness and gentleness, combined with an underlying firmness of character, she was greatly beloved by all who knew her”. Times of London for 25 January 1960.

Arthur Lindsay DAKYNS died 10 March 1941 in England. His death was reported in the Times of London as follows:
DAKYNS – Died March 10, 1941, at Steepangle, Barnet Gate Lane, Barnet. Arthur Lindsay DAKYNS, younger son of the late Henry Graham DAKYNS, and husband of Peggy DAKYNS. Services were cremation at Golders Green, on Friday, March 14. Times of London for 12 March 1941.
Margaret Frances DAKYNS did not marry. She died 17 January 1960. Her death was reported in the Times of London as follows:
DAKYNS – Died January 17, 1960, Margaret Frances DAKYNS, of Lillywhites, Westburton, daughter of the late Henry Graham and Margaret E. DAKYNS (Of Clifton College and Haslemere). Services January 21st, at St. George’s Church, Hurstpierpoint, followed by cremation, at the Downs Crematorium, Brighton. Flowers may be sent to Mr. F. DAVEY, 31, High Street, Hurstpierpoint. Times of London, 20 January 1960.

A much larger obituary for “Miss Frances DAKYNS” can be found in the Times of London of the same date above, which details that she:
“devoted her life to self-sacrificing volunteer work, chiefly to musical causes.” It further states that her father was “the tutor of Lord Tennyson’s sons; he was the housemaster at Clifton College for whom T. E. BROWN wrote his beautiful “Dakynsiana”; her brother in law A. D. GODLEY is remembered for the brilliant wit of “Lyra Frivola.” Obit further states that: “The family motto is “Strike Dakyns, the Devil is in the Hemp,” given to a naval ancestor, and that she and Mrs. Winifred DAKYNS were sisters-in-law.”

Thomas Arnold DAKYNS was born about 1839. He immigrated to the United States about 1880, settling first in Iowa, where he was naturalized as a U. S. citizen on 20 October 1880. He later moved to Oregon.

Bury Irwin DAKYNS was born about 1841. He married Emma PALMER on 16 December 1867 in Saint Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, England. They lived in the United States about 1870 to 1910. His death is reported in the Times of London for 03 April 1918 as follows:

Further information found in Iowa records shows that he and his brother Thomas Arnold DAKYNS were both naturalized as U. S. citizens in Winneshiek County, Bury I. DAKYNS on 11 March 1886 (Book 8, Page 20), and T. A. DAKYNS on 20 October 1880 (Book 7, Page 81).

Charles Stewart DAKYNS was born in January 1846. He married Constance Agnez GERRARD in London, England in 1870. She was born 02 April 1848 in Umballa, West Bengal, India to John Grant GERRARD and his wife Mary Ann S. BUNBURY. Charles and Constance immigrated to the United States in the 1870’s and both died in Oregon. Charles S. DAKYNS died 04 December 1933 in Douglas County, Oregon, and his wife Constance died 31 January 1923 in Multnomah County, Oregon. They had one child, a daughter, Agnes H. DAKYNS, born September 1871. She married Hazel T. PAGE of Oregon.

George Doherty DAKYNS was born after 1846. He married Augusta FIELD on 06 August 1883 at St. Peter’s-in-the-East Church, Croydon, England. Their marriage was announced in the Times of London for 16 August 1883 as follows:
On the 6th Aug., at St. Peter’s-in-the-East Church, Croydon, by the Rev. J. R. KING, Vicar, GEORGE DOHERTY DAKYNS, M. A., Magd. Coll. Oxford, youngest son of the late Thos. Henry DAKYNS, of Rugby, to AUGUSTA, youngest daughter of the late FRANCIS FIELD, of Oxford.
They had at least two sons, George DAKYNS, born in 1893, and Francis Henry DAKYNS, born in 1892, who married Doris Muriel HEARN on 10 April 1922 in St. James’s Church, Morpeth, England.
Their marriage was announced in the Times of London for 22 April 1922 as follows:
