St. Vincent and the Grenadines National Heroes Day His Excellency Chief Joseph Chatoyer is the only National Hero in St. Vincent and the Grenadines St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a nation comprised of a group of more than 30 islands, with St. Vincent being the largest of the islands. St. Vincent and the Grenadines are part of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Every March, the country celebrates Heroes and Heritage month. Throughout the month, the country learns about and remembers the past by holding cultural events and Indigenous People’s Day celebrations. Many Vincentians make an annual pilgrimage to the Grenadine island of Balliceaux to pay homage to the fallen indigenous people, many of whom were later exiled to the region that became Belize and other parts of Central America. March 14 is National Heroes Day. On this day, the country honours their national hero, Chief Joseph Chatoyer. He led the nation in preventing the Europeans from colonizing the islands. On March 14, 1795, Chatoyer was killed by British troops at Dorsetshire Hill. A monument honouring Chatoyer stands on this spot. As part of the Heroes Day celebration, a wreath-laying ceremony is held at the obelisk at Dorsetshire Hill every year.
