Day Twelve: The Peace of Gratitude
Scripture: Colossians 3:15–17
“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Reflection:
Paul weaves together peace, gratitude, and worship in this beautiful passage. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts… and be thankful.” The two are connected. Peace and gratitude are inseparable companions.
The word “rule” is an athletic term—it means to act as an umpire, to make the call, to determine what is in and what is out. When the peace of Christ rules in our hearts, it governs our emotions, directs our decisions, and sets the tone for our lives. And gratitude is the atmosphere in which this peace flourishes.
Paul then expands the picture: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Gratitude is not just an individual practice but a communal one. We give thanks together—in our gathered worship, in our shared life, in our mutual encouragement.
And finally, Paul extends gratitude to every area of life: “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Gratitude is not confined to Sunday mornings or prayer times. It saturates all of life—work and rest, speech and silence, action and reflection. Everything we do is to be accompanied by thanksgiving.
This is a vision of life wholly oriented toward gratitude. Every moment is an opportunity for thanks. Every activity is an occasion for praise. Every interaction is a chance to acknowledge God’s goodness.
How different would your life look if you practiced this? If every word was spoken with thanksgiving, how would your conversations change? If every deed was done with gratitude, how would your work transform? If peace ruled in your heart and thankfulness flowed from your lips, how would your relationships flourish?
Journal: Where do you most need the peace of Christ to rule in your heart today? How might gratitude help you experience that peace?
Practice: Let gratitude be the rule that governs your heart in every situation today. Before every word and deed, pause and give thanks.
Prayer: Lord, let Your peace rule in my heart, and let gratitude be the atmosphere in which I live. Help me to give thanks in every word and deed, to worship You in every moment, and to let Your word dwell in me richly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
