Day Twenty-Six: Gratitude in Community
Scripture: Acts 2:46–47
“And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Reflection:
The early church was a community of gratitude. They gathered daily, breaking bread in their homes, receiving their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God. Their gratitude was not just individual but corporate. It was not just private but public. It was not just occasional but daily.
Notice the atmosphere of this community: glad and generous. Gladness is the outward expression of gratitude. When we are grateful, we are glad. And gladness produces generosity. When we recognize how much we have received, we cannot help but give.
This is what community gratitude looks like. It looks like shared meals, shared joy, shared praise. It looks like hearts overflowing with thanksgiving and hands open to give. It looks like a group of people so grateful for God’s grace that they cannot help but share it with one another and with the world.
And notice the result: “the Lord added to their number day by day.” Gratitude is attractive. When people see a community marked by joy and generosity, they want to be part of it. When they see a group of people who are genuinely thankful, genuinely glad, genuinely generous, they are drawn to the God who makes such a community possible.
This is the power of communal gratitude. It is not just a blessing to us; it is a witness to the world. When we give thanks together, we proclaim that God is good. When we share our blessings with one another, we demonstrate His generosity. When we rejoice in community, we show that our joy is not dependent on circumstances but on the God who is with us.
Consider how you can contribute to the gratitude of your community. Who needs to hear your testimony of God’s faithfulness? Who needs to see your example of thankfulness? Who needs to share a meal with you, to receive from your generosity, to worship alongside you?
Journal: How can you contribute to the gratitude of your community? Who has helped you give thanks, and whom can you help?
Practice: Reach out to someone in your community today and express gratitude for them specifically. Share a meal, offer a word of thanks, or worship together.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of community. Thank You for the brothers and sisters who have helped me give thanks. Help me to contribute to the gratitude of my community—to be a source of encouragement, a model of thankfulness, and a vessel of generosity. May our shared gratitude be a witness to the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
